Pistol found in child's backpack at Canton daycare

The case took place in the city of Canton. Authorities said one of the child's parents works as a police officer in the region. The police did not say whether the detained person was the police officer nor did they detail whether he was the child's father or mother.

According to the local police chief, Joseph Bialy, employees at the daycare center noticed that the child had the gun and acted quickly. The police were called and seized the pistol. Nobody was injured.

Bialy stated that the action was recorded by internal monitoring cameras. The images were not released.

Police are still investigating how the gun ended up in the child's backpack. According to Bialy, apparently the pistol seized is not a weapon used by the corporation.

The daycare informed the police that it will reinforce security protocols and start searching children's backpacks. According to Bialy, employees already had safety procedures in place.
