Police officer who shot and killed a young man on Christmas 2024 is sentenced to more than 17 years in prison in Manaus

The trial lasted two days and was carried out by the 3rd Court of the Jury Court of the District of Manaus. Jurors convicted Ederson of qualified homicide for futile reasons.

The crime occurred on December 25, 2024, at a family party. Armed and drunk, the police officer fired 3 shots at Kennedy.

The police officer turned himself in on December 27, 2024. The Jury Court acquitted him of 2 other charges of attempted murder.

Military police officer Ederson Oséias Cordeiro Lira was sentenced to 17 years, 2 months and 8 days in prison for the murder of Kennedy Cardoso de Miranda, aged 22, who was shot dead during a Christmas party in Manaus.

The sentence must initially be served in a closed regime. In addition to prison, the sentence determined the loss of the public position that the police officer held in the Amazonas Military Police (PMAM).

The trial lasted two days and was carried out by the 3rd Court of the Jury Court of the District of Manaus. Jurors convicted Ederson of qualified homicide for futile reasons.

The Sentencing Council, however, acquitted the police officer of charges of attempted murder against two other people who were in the residence at the time of the crime: João Batista Souza da Silva and Sane Sílvia Marques de Souza.

The sentence also ordered the defendant's immediate arrest to begin serving his sentence, based on the understanding of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that allows the provisional execution of Jury Court decisions.

The loss of public office was determined based on article 92 of the Penal Code and the STF's understanding of the possibility of loss of office in cases of convictions that meet the requirements set out in law.

Ederson had already been in pre-trial detention since the time of the crime and, therefore, will not be able to appeal the sentence while free. The decision can be appealed.

The crime

Kennedy Cardoso de Miranda was born in Autazes, in the interior of Amazonas, and was 22 years old. He had traveled to Manaus to spend Christmas with his girlfriend's family.

According to the Public Ministry's complaint, the celebration took place normally until the arrival of Ederson, who went to the residence to visit his daughters. The police officer had been married to Kennedy's girlfriend's sister.

According to the report, the police officer was armed and visibly intoxicated. During the gathering, he would have made jokes and comments to the guests.

At one point, Ederson sat next to Kennedy and asked the young man questions. Then, he got up, took out a gun and fired three shots. Kennedy was hit in the head.

A municipal guard who was at the scene tried to restrain the police officer and stop the attack. During the riot, Ederson fled with the weapon used in the crime.

Kennedy was rescued by witnesses and taken to the Danilo Corrêa Emergency Care Service (SPA), in the North Zone of Manaus. He succumbed to his injuries and died in the early hours of the morning.

Prison

After the crime, which occurred on December 25, 2024, the Court ordered the police officer's temporary arrest.

Two days later, on the morning of December 27, Ederson handed himself in to the Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Police Station (DEHS), accompanied by a lawyer.

According to the Amazonas Civil Police (PC-AM), he was interviewed and subsequently underwent a custody hearing. Preventive detention was maintained.

Since then, the police officer has remained in preventive detention. With the conviction by the Jury Court, the immediate beginning of the sentence was determined.
