President Nawrocki opposes the parliament's rejection of the National Broadcasting Council's report

Karol Nawrocki, President of the Republic of Poland, issued an official statement in which he firmly opposed the decision of the Sejm and Senate to reject the report of the National Broadcasting Council for 2025. "I categorically disagree with the arguments contained in the above-mentioned resolutions of the Sejm and Senate and therefore I do not confirm the expiry of the terms of office of members of the National Broadcasting Council," the president wrote on the website nazwa.pl.

Parliament versus the National Broadcasting Council – what is it about?

The Sejm and Senate rejected the KRRiT report, citing a number of allegations. These included, among others: judgments of administrative courts regarding the inaction and excessive length of proceedings regarding the transfer of funds from license fees, gross violations of the law in this area, lack of response to complaints regarding hate speech and insufficient enforcement of license fees, especially against TV Republika.

The regulations are clear, but the decision rests with the president

According to the applicable regulations, if the KRRiT report is rejected by both houses of parliament, the term of office of all members of the Council should expire. However, the president plays a key role here and must sign the appropriate decision. Without his signature, the term of office does not expire.

This situation is not new - a similar scenario occurred last year, when President Nawrocki also did not agree to the end of the Council's term of office, despite the rejection of its report by the Sejm and Senate.

In the history of the National Broadcasting Council, only once, in 2010, was the Council dissolved after its report was rejected by the Parliament and the decision was signed by President Bronisław Komorowski.
