The first civic-military school managed by the City of São José do Rio Preto (SP) was announced this Monday (21) and is expected to begin activities in 2027.

The project will be implemented at the Professora Doutora Maria Dalva Silva Pagotto Municipal School, in the Eng. Schmitt neighborhood, in Redentora. According to the city hall, the unit will have an extended day and capacity for 490 students, 240 of which will be Early Childhood Education, including places for 40 babies and 250 for Elementary School I.

According to the municipal administration, the school will remain public, free and part of the Municipal Education Network. Pedagogical management will remain entirely under the responsibility of the Municipal Department of Education.

Regarding enrollment, the city hall informs that the opening of vacancies will be announced in advance by the secretariat, with no provision for selecting students based on grades, academic performance or behavior.

"A public school, with teachers from our Network, more time for children at school and a model that values ​​discipline, organization, responsibility, citizenship and family participation. We are expanding the possibilities of public education in our city", says Mayor Fábio Candido (PL).

The Civic-Military Schools Program (ECM) was established by Complementary Law No. 1,398/2024.

Civic-military schools in the northwest of SP

In the northwest region of São Paulo, thirteen schools were announced that joined the Civic-Military Schools Program (ECM), totaling 100 in the state, which began in February this year.

According to Seduc-SP, the program is based on principles such as civility, dedication, excellence, respect and honesty.

The ministry also highlighted that the established values do not refer to typically military practices, but to “citizen values, common to the performance of any professional activity.”

Military police officers who will be hired to act as monitors in civic-military schools will be able to earn around R$1,000 more than teachers in the state education network.

School closing

On the other hand, the Municipal Department of Education informed, this Tuesday (22), that the Red Riding Hood Municipal School will be deactivated from the 2027 school year. The measure caused outrage among parents of students, who claim that the institution is traditional and essential in the training of future citizens.

According to the ministry, the Basic I students, approximately 30 children, will be absorbed by the Escola Municipal Professora Doutora Maria Dalva Silva Pagotto. The Basic II students, around 30, will be served by the Sister Estelita daycare center.

The decision was taken after a technical assessment by the Teaching Supervision highlighted the need for major works and interventions in the institution's structure. Currently, the school serves 60 children aged between zero and two years and 11 months.

If parents want to transfer their children to other schools, Education clarified that it will be necessary to go to Poupatempo in January to make the request.
