Fuel prices: aid for long-distance drivers is “a gas factory”, according to Sophie Binet

The extension and expansion of aid for heavy commuters, announced by the government on Tuesday, is “a gas factory” which does not “respond to the problem” of soaring fuel prices, estimated Wednesday September 23, 2026 on RTL, the general secretary of the CGT Sophie Binet.

“It absolutely does not address the problem, because it is a gas plant. It is very complicated to make this request. The proof is that half of the people who could have access to it do not request it,” she stressed. “The second problem is that it’s a drop in the ocean, since it’s 100 euros in one go, but 100 euros is a full (...) I’m thinking of nurses, home helpers for example, that absolutely does not cover the explosion in gasoline prices,” she continued.

A mobilization on September 29

Faced with record fuel prices, which continue to rise due to conflicts in the Middle East, the government is under pressure from many professional sectors asking for financial assistance. The executive announced on Tuesday September 22 an extension until the end of 2026 and an expansion of aid for heavy commuters, which should potentially benefit 5.5 million people.

For Sophie Binet, there is “a very simple proposal which costs nothing, which consists of blocking prices and blocking oil tanker margins”. “Total has made 120 billion in profits in five years (...) There are war profiteers and the problem is that the government does not want to tackle this problem,” she said.
