“We simply ask to be able to work.” Like “24 other people” from the Rennes academy, Nicolas* is still awaiting his assignment as a school teacher. The young man nevertheless “met the requirements” of the CRPE (school teacher recruitment competition), which he obtained this year. He appears on the “additional list” which should allow him to be placed in a vacant position and to continue his training.
This year, “four people” from this famous list would have been called, according to the academy. The other contenders must therefore be patient. And the stakes are high: “candidates who are not called before September 30 lose the benefit of their competition” and are condemned to take it again, explains Emmanuelle Maray, secretary of the FSU-SNUipp union in Ille-et-Vilaine.
“Political and budgetary choices”
Without an assignment as the start of the school year approaches, the winners of the complementary list of the Rennes academy have decided to set up a collective and apply for the rectorate. What do they deplore? Being neglected in favor of precarious contracts. “Academies favor hiring contract workers on fixed-term contracts who have failed or have not passed the CRPE,” points out the collective. “These are political and budgetary choices,” says Caroline Brisedoux, national secretary at the CFDT education training public research. “Some academic unions ask their rectorate to favor complementary lists rather than calling on contract workers without competition, but this is not the case everywhere. »
Contacted by 20 Minutes, the Rennes academy justified itself: “we are informed and have taken note of the situation. However, the call of winners from the complementary list and the hiring of fixed-term contracts are two different things. Contract workers are only requested for temporary positions while successful candidates from the complementary list are contacted as part of a withdrawal from the main list. It’s post for post. »
Until now, all the people on the complementary list “were called up every year,” continues the academy. For the 2026 school year, “we actually did not call the rest of the list. » Brittany is a region “particularly attractive for teachers”, adds the academy.
“We are not opposed to contract workers,” explains Caroline Brisedoux. The question is what proportion this reaches. » On the other side of the chain, there are also contract workers who are toasting. “Teachers on fixed-term contracts, who have been called upon on numerous occasions, find themselves overnight with nothing at the start of the school year. »
A different system in secondary school
In secondary education, the lack of affection primarily concerns contract workers (in middle school/high school, the complementary list system does not exist). “For several years, contract workers have been the easy solution for rectorates. Many were placed in classes without training in record time because it was necessary to respond to the policy of “one teacher in front of each class”,” recalls Sophie Vénétitay, general secretary of Snes-fsu. This year, some of these contract workers were not renewed despite the needs, underlines the union.
Result: “without a contract, these teachers no longer have a link with National Education. Some wait, others look elsewhere and report to France Travail,” adds the general secretary.
“Special attention”
On the ministry side, the situation seems less alarming. “Each rectorate controls its recruitment and adjusts it according to needs, with a disciplinary logic in the second degree […] and, as far as possible, according to the individual situations of contractual staff,” affirmed the ministry at the start of the week. The situation of non-renewed contract workers is “the subject of particular attention”, it is specified.
