Russians are increasingly suffering from depression and anxiety due to the economic situation and the war

The state of the economy and the war as sources of pessimism

According to the authors of the monitoring, the mental condition of society is influenced primarily by negative economic expectations and weakening hopes for a quick end to the war.

The RAN Institute of Psychology points out that the growth of the Russian economy has clearly slowed down, and there is a decline in activity in the civilian sector. The pace of wage and income growth also slowed, and inflation increased.

In research by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), conducted on behalf of the Russian central bank, the consumer expectations index dropped below 100 points in the summer. This boundary separates optimistic from pessimistic moods.

The lowest level of mental well-being was recorded in the group of people aged 25 to 34. According to researchers, their emotional condition has been deteriorating since spring. Low-income Russians are particularly vulnerable to mental health complications.

Residents of large cities report symptoms of depression more often, while anxiety is more common among rural residents.

Researchers emphasize that the relationship works both ways. Economic problems may worsen the mental condition, but depression and anxiety may also reduce the economic activity of society. As a result - as they warn - a mechanism of mutually reinforcing pessimism may be created.

Record sales of antidepressants

According to data cited by The Moscow Times, Russians are buying record amounts of antidepressants for the third year in a row. The increase in drug sales alone does not determine the scale of mental disorders, but may indicate a larger number of people seeking help for depression, anxiety disorders or adaptation problems.

The study also shows that 66% of people declared fear of their own finances in May. respondents. In early July, this percentage dropped to 56%, but increased again in July and August.

The RAN Institute of Psychology recorded a decrease in the percentage of people who believe that they have an influence on what happens in their lives. In July, 38 percent expressed this opinion. respondents, while in April 2022 it was 67%.

Researchers warn that the continued sense of insecurity could have long-term social consequences, including a devastating impact on Russia's demography.
