S pushes Kristersson to resign after preliminary election results

The preliminary vote count stands two days after the election, with 176 mandates for the opposition parties against the Tidö parties' 173. This causes S to pressure the government to leave room for a new leadership.

- If the position right now becomes the final result, I expect two things. Firstly, that he calls Magdalena Andersson and admits defeat. Secondly, that he submits his resignation as the country's prime minister, says S's party secretary Tobias Baudin to the press outside the party office at Sveavägen 68.

Baudin believes that the election result, as it still looks, is a rejection of Kristersson's government background. Instead of accepting it, Baudin says he senses that Kristersson is "trying to cling on".

- We know he likes being prime minister. He starts talking about there being some non-socialist majority and that he will now try to find some agreement with C.

M's party secretary Karin Enström says in a comment on Baudin's actions that M does not intend to precede the final count with any public comment: "Out of respect for the voters, we would have liked that attitude from several parties."

The electoral authority has pointed out that the record early voting - at the time of writing 3.7 million or 57.8 percent - has caused some delays in the process. This means that the usual so-called Wednesday votes are not expected to be fully counted until Thursday.

- We cannot know the number in advance, but estimate that it is close to 300,000 votes in this year's election. This means that the collection count will likely take a long time in many municipalities and that we will only have an updated preliminary election result for the Riksdag on Thursday, says Anna Nyqvist, head of the Swedish Election Authority's office.
