The stolen Bergslag urn: The Court of Appeal increases the damages to SEK 722,500

It was in September 2015 that the valuable urn - a so-called Bergslag urn - disappeared from Lindgården in Jönköping. An art dealer had offered to try to restore the urn, and picked it up with a companion.

But instead, the urn was sold at an auction firm in Stockholm for SEK 722,500 and ended up with a private person, something that was revealed by the Uppdrag review.

The man was sentenced this spring by the Jönköping District Court for gross fraud, because it was considered that he had no intention of returning the urn. The man is also said to have made up a background story about the urn to increase interest in it.

Increases damages

In the district court, the man was sentenced to probation, and to pay damages of just under SEK 350,000. The man had referred to the fact that he had spent money on a renovation.

But the Court of Appeal does not consider it a reason to withhold the damages, but now rules that he must pay the full value from the sale of SEK 722,500. Otherwise, the verdict stands.
