Storm on the US East Coast: Tens of thousands without power, deaths and canceled events

Tens of thousands of people are without power after storms on the east coast of the USA. In New York state alone, 35,000 households were affected by power outages, according to the website poweroutage.com.

Governor Kathy Hochul had declared a state of emergency for some districts as a precautionary measure. It warned of "extremely dangerous conditions" along the coast due to high waves and flooding.

In New York, a man was fatally injured by a falling tree, US media reported. The authorities in the metropolis received numerous reports of fallen trees.

Many events canceled

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, where heads of state and government from all over the world are gathering until Monday for the UN general debate, television and radio stations were called upon to bring their technical equipment to safety due to strong winds.

Numerous cancellations and delays were reported in air traffic. According to data from the flight portal Flightaware, more than 250 flights were canceled at Boston Airport in the US state of Massachusetts alone on Saturday morning.

In view of the storm, organizers canceled several concerts with world stars planned for the weekend. Among other things, the Global Citizen Festival, which has taken place every year in Central Park in New York since 2012, has been canceled for the first time in its history, the organizers announced. Two planned concerts by pop star Ed Sheeran near Boston were also canceled due to the weather.
