Tropical depression TD29 will intensify into Typhoon Shuliki, the 25th typhoon this year, as soon as today (23rd). It is expected to reach the mid-level level when it approaches Taiwan. The current path is still variable, and it may turn north on the 27th and 28th, or it may continue to move westward towards Taiwan. Typhoon dynamics have become the focus of attention. Wang Shijie, a precipitation technology technician from the Science and Technology Development Group of the Central Meteorological Administration, said that the new generation severe weather monitoring system QPEplus has a public version, which can be used without an account or login. Information such as typhoon paths, satellite cloud images, radar echoes and rainfall can all be viewed on the same platform, allowing the public to understand typhoons and wind and rain changes in one stop.

The Meteorological Department held a practical meteorological seminar, and Wang Shijie explained the "new generation severe weather monitoring system". He pointed out that major natural disasters in Taiwan include typhoons and heavy rains. Meiyu, southwest airflow, mesoscale convective systems, etc. may also bring heavy rainfall. Therefore, weather information should not only be "visible", but also allow users to quickly grasp risks.

QPEplus is like putting different meteorological tools into the same electronic map, integrating information such as weather radar, meteorological and rainfall observations, lightning and thunder detection, satellites and typhoon paths, and can also overlay different meteorological and geographical maps. In addition to the public version, the Meteorological Administration also creates customized versions based on the disaster prevention needs of different agencies, converting complex meteorological data into "when to pay attention" warning information.

What’s interesting is that in the face of severe weather, the things that each unit fears most are completely different. Wang Shijie said, "The Highway Bureau is more concerned about rainfall, while the Taiwan Railway is more concerned about lightning." Taking the Taiwan Railway as an example, the system combines the location of the railway and the station. As long as lightning occurs within a radius of 10 kilometers of the station, a light reminder will be turned on, allowing the Taiwan Railway personnel to understand the weather that may affect operations.

Maokong Cable Car is also afraid of thunderstorms. Wang Shijie said that the system monitors whether lightning is approaching according to different ranges such as 3 kilometers, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and 20 kilometers. When the conditions are met, the lights will be turned on to provide operators with response. The Civil Aviation Administration is also concerned about lightning, but the focus is on the area around the airport. Different units face different risks and therefore require different meteorological information.

There is also an exclusive version for the sea. Wang Shijie pointed out that the customized version of the Port Bureau has set wind and wave warning thresholds for the waters surrounding Taiwan. For example, if a certain proportion of grids in a specific area experience level 7 winds or wave heights of 3 meters, the system will light up to remind that sea conditions may be dangerous. The Meteorological Administration provides weather information, and it is up to the competent authority to decide whether to restrict ships from going to sea and other measures.

For the general public, QPEplus does not require an account to log in. When a typhoon approaches, you can not only look at the predicted path, but also use satellite cloud images, radar echoes and rainfall to observe how the clouds move and where the rain falls. In the face of typhoons whose paths are still variable, in addition to chasing a predicted path, they can also grasp the actual changes in wind and rain from different meteorological data.
