Turin, procession in the Vanchiglia neighborhood for the death of the child who was hit

Around three hundred people took part in the 'Stop dying on the streets' demonstration this morning in the Vanchiglia district of Turin, following the death of Nicolò, the seven-year-old boy hit yesterday by a car while he was cycling to school with his father. Moms and dads with children, teenagers and elderly people met at 7.30 in Corso Regina Margherita and formed a 'human cycle path': a cordon of people cordoned off the cycle lane, requiring cars passing along the service road to slow down. "Safety on the road is not a privilege" is the message of the event.

At number 63, on the spot where Nicolò was hit yesterday morning, a 'ghost bike' was placed, a white bicycle in memory of the child. After the demonstration, the demonstrators moved in a procession towards Palazzo di Città. The Avs group leader in the city council, Sara Diena, also participated in the event. "Mobility must be treated as an issue of quality of life and as an issue of survival - he commented -. It could have happened anywhere, but it happened in Vanchiglia, a neighborhood that contains more than seven school complexes in just a few blocks, a neighborhood that for years has been calling for courageous and innovative policies on mobility".

Diena supports the request of the Cycling Mobility Council to close the stretch of road where the accident occurred to cars, guaranteeing access to residents, and to reserve it for pedestrians and bicycles. "As a city we have certainly done a lot, pedestrianisation, sanctions against malasosta, preferential and political lanes from the city to the districts, but evidently all this is not enough. It is not enough until a person's life is worth less than a few parking spaces, it will be worth less than the right to drive in a car".
