Xi and Trump held their second meeting in four months, underscoring the durability of China-US ties

President Trump and I had a frank and in-depth exchange and reached agreement on a number of issues. This has given new substance to the constructive Sino-US relationship in terms of strategic stability and provided new strategic guidance for Sino-US relations, Xi said in a speech at a gala dinner hosted in his honor by Trump.

Xi did not mention the agreements concluded with the US president. However, he called the meeting with him - the second in four months - a "historic moment" in the relations between the two powers. He also expressed hope for strengthening the friendship between China and the United States.

Trump did not refer to any agreements in his speech. But he stressed that he and Xi understand that "although they represent different systems, the bonds between their nations are enduring and they have never gotten along better."

The US president expressed regret that he could not yet receive Xi in the ballroom under construction. However, he invited guests to admire the building under construction, which is scheduled to be completed within a year.

Trump also presented a gift for Xi - a sculpture of an American bald eagle sitting on a branch. During the public part of the speech, the Chinese leader did not present a similar gift to the host.

Both politicians extensively recalled the common past of both countries, especially the alliance during World War II and - as Xi put it - fighting side by side against the Japanese militaristic aggressors.

Technology giants at dinner with the Chinese leader

The dinner in Xi's honor was part of extremely lavish ceremonies marking the Chinese leader's visit.

It was attended by representatives of the American political and business elites, including: the heads of Nvidia, Google, Apple, OpenAI, Microsoft, JPMorgan and Boeing.

Dinner included a stew of wild mushrooms in pumpkin sauce, sea bass in sesame seeds with roasted Chinese cabbage, as well as ice cream with White House honey and cake with walnuts and cherry jam.

No details of the conversations

So far, the White House and President Trump have not disclosed any details of the talks with Xi or any agreements reached.

All information about the course of the talks comes from Chinese state media.

According to Xinhua, Xi and Trump "exchanged views" on the war in Ukraine. Xi also allegedly encouraged Trump to return to negotiations with Iran and called for caution regarding Taiwan.

We hope that the American side will stick to the correct position opposing Taiwan's "independence", approach the problem carefully and lay solid foundations for strategic cooperation - said the Chinese leader, quoted by the agency.

Before the meeting, Trump spoke about the need to balance trade relations and announced a conversation about artificial intelligence. At the same time, he opposed the regulation of this technology.

A day earlier, the US and China extended the truce in their trade war. However, it is valid only until January 10.
