Greek opposition calls on the government to explain the US official allegation

Radical Left Alliance Party (SYRIZA) stated that the allegations in question are serious and asked the government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to clarify whether the incident really happened.

The party also stated that it should be disclosed whether Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavru was threatened by the US Ambassador and how the government reacted to the incident.

New Left also stated that the government did not confirm or deny the allegations even though 24 hours had passed since the news was published, and asked why the incident was not made public even though it took place in March.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE), on the other hand, criticized the government for remaining silent and reacted to the US policy towards the transportation of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Balkans and the US-Greece strategic cooperation.

In the news in the Wall Street Journal, it was claimed that Guilfoyle had an argument with Papastavru at a dinner attended by Greek and American officials in Athens in March.

In the news, Guilfoyle referred to the impending fall of the Romanian government and said, "We can do this in any country we want. We can do it here too." Papastavru allegedly replied that the USA cannot change the government elected by the Greek people. It was stated that Guilfoyle's lawyer objected to the way the conversation was conveyed in the news.

WSJ's report also stated that Guilfoyle was involved in activities to develop the "Vertical Corridor", which aims to transport American LNG to the Balkans and Ukraine via Greece, and that the USA was trying to increase American LNG sales in order to reduce Europe's dependence on Russian natural gas.
