The Yilan District Prosecutor's Office today investigated the first serious case of intimidating a candidate to withdraw from the election in Yilan City. It is suspected that in order to protect a specific candidate, the chairperson of a temple named Cai in Yilan City broke into the residence of three other candidates before the registration deadline and threatened to withdraw from the election.

It is understood that the chairman surnamed Cai was extremely domineering and used his power to intimidate the candidates surnamed Lin in Zhuangwei Township and the candidates surnamed Zhuang and Lan in Xinshe Village and Gonggong Village. He complained angrily that there were "too many votes" and forced him not to compete with the candidates he supported. He even threatened to remove the campaign posters and wantonly trampled on other people's rights to participate in the election. They were reported by the public. In the end, the three people did not give in and completed the registration one after another.

After the Yilan District Prosecutor's Office received the report, Huang Mingzheng, prosecutor of the Anti-Crime and Major Case Enforcement Team, directed the Yilan County Government Police Criminal Police Brigade and Jiaoxi Branch to investigate. Today, with a search ticket issued by the court, Cai was arrested and brought to court.

After a re-examination by the prosecutor, it was determined that Cai Nan was seriously suspected of committing the crime of using violence, coercion or other illegal methods to interfere with others' electioneering or causing others to give up their electioneering according to Article 98, Paragraph 1, Paragraph 1, of the Public Employee Election and Recall Law. Cai was ordered to post a bail of NT$100,000 and was prohibited from contacting the victim and witnesses again.

Wang Bodun, the prosecutor general of the Yilan District Prosecutor's Office, emphasized that in the face of gangsters' unscrupulous interference in the election, the prosecutors have shown their iron-fisted determination to defend the rule of law. In addition to launching a comprehensive mechanism to investigate bribery and suppress violence, they also adopt a "zero tolerance" attitude towards gangs' attempts to interfere in the election through intimidation and coercion. They will definitely investigate strictly and expeditiously, and will never tolerate those who challenge public power.
