The Russian Foreign Ministry announced vague prospects for the entry into force of the CTBT due to the position of the United States

Prospects for the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) remain dim. This is stated in the commentary of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova in connection with the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the CTBT.

“Despite the fact that the treaty was ratified by 179 states out of 188 signatories, the prospects for the entry into force of the CTBT are equally vague. The reason for this is the position of a number of states, primarily the United States, which was one of the initiators of the treaty, but, nevertheless, over the past decades has not taken effective measures to ratify it,” the diplomat noted.

Zakharova recalled the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who warned that Moscow would take adequate retaliatory measures if the United States or other countries conducted natural nuclear tests.

“We strictly follow this approach,” the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
