“Sergei Vladimirovich was a champion in everything and tried to give his all in biathlon and cross-country skiing, as well as in public life and parliamentary work, to which he devoted himself after completing a brilliant sports career. His life and work are a vivid example of serving Russian society, first in the sports field, and then as a legislator: he fulfilled his duty as a deputy to the end in the Duma Committee on State Building and Legislation. Chepikov died on Wednesday at the age of 59. Olympic champion in speed skating, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova told RIA Novosti that the cause of his death was oncology.
Chepikov became the first overall World Cup winner in the history of Soviet biathlon, winning the trophy in the 1989/90 season. The following season he won the big Crystal Globe for the second time. At the Olympic Games he won gold medals in the relay (1988) and sprint (1994). He also has three silver (1992, 1994, 2006) and one bronze (1988) Games, two gold, eight silver and three bronze medals at the World Championships. Chepikov was also the standard bearer of the Russian team at the opening ceremony of the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer.
