Dog dies while bathing and grooming in pet shop in Macapá; tutor files police report

The owner of a 2-year-old Yorkshire dog registered a police report after the animal died on Monday afternoon (14), during a bath and grooming service at a pet shop in Macapá.

According to Vitória Dias, Nick had been visiting the establishment since February. She left the dog there at around 2pm. About three hours later, he received a request from the pet shop to return to the establishment.

At around 5:30 pm, Vitória found Nick lying on a counter, with paper under his head and blood in his mouth, lifeless. According to her, the person responsible for the establishment stated that the dog was on a collar when it jumped off the counter and hanged itself.

"Nick wasn't just a dog, he was my son, my life. At home it was just me, him and my mother. He is and will be missed and nothing will bring him back. So I hope that, at the very least, justice is done and that other animals don't go through this again."

According to the guardian, she initiated the investigative procedures, called the Military Police and registered a police report with the Civil Police. In addition, he paid R$1,000 for a private autopsy.

Still at the scene, Vitória asked for images from the security cameras, but received information that the external hard drive had stopped working the previous week.

According to Vitória, the establishment's employees were aware of Nick's behavior because he had been visiting the place monthly since February. Some people called him “runaway Nick”.

"They knew Nick. It wasn't like it was his first bath and grooming. They knew he jumped and ran away, he even had a nickname," he said.

She claims that the establishment was not responsible for expenses after Nick's death.

What the pet shop says

In a statement released on social media, the establishment lamented the death of the animal, stated that it provided assistance to the family and said that it maintains dialogue with the owners.

The company stated that: "Since becoming aware of what happened, it has adopted all necessary measures to clarify the facts. The circumstances of the episode are being investigated, in order to clarify the causes of death. Out of respect for the family and the seriousness of the case, we will not anticipate conclusions or reproduce information that has not yet been properly verified."
