China accuses Japan of inflating external threats to accelerate remilitarization

BEIJING, September 29. /TASS/. The Japanese government is deliberately inflating the so-called external threat to accelerate the country’s remilitarization and alter the post-World War II international order, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a briefing.

"Japan is inflating the so-called external threat and using it as a pretext to accelerate remilitarization and alter the postwar international order, putting regional peace and stability at risk," he said.

According to Guo Jiakun, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi "refused to reflect on Japan’s history of aggression [during World War II] and even said that a Taiwan emergency would pose a threat to Tokyo’s survival." The diplomat noted that such statements violate China’s sovereignty and run counter to regional countries’ expectations regarding the normalization of China-Japan relations.

In November 2025, Takaichi said in parliament that she did not rule out the use of force in the event of a military crisis near Taiwan. The Chinese authorities regard these remarks as an open threat and interference in China’s internal affairs.

Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when remnants of Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island after being defeated in the Chinese Civil War. Since then, Taipei has retained the flag and some other symbols of the former Republic of China, which existed on the mainland before the communists came to power. Beijing considers Taiwan to be one of the provinces of the People’s Republic of China.
