Wang Nan funded the plan due to minor reasons, and Chen Nan led the way to find a gunman named Zheng, who prepared rifles and pistols. At the time of the incident, Zheng Nan originally wanted to shoot with a rifle, but because he was not familiar with the operation, the bullet jammed, so he fired with a pistol instead. Later, when Wang Nan learned that the rifle had jammed, he felt that firing only one round would make him lose face. He not only blamed Chen Nan and others, but also gathered his accomplices under a bridge in Wanluan to personally teach how to operate the gun. He planned to fire again. Fortunately, he was caught by the police in time and was sentenced severely in the first instance.

Wang Nan and Chen Nan appealed against the verdict and requested a lighter sentence. The defender argued that the gunman shot at the gate in the early morning when there were few people around, and there were no other people living nearby and no cars passing by. Moreover, the gunman only fired once under the iron door. The victim's family was all sleeping on the second floor at the time of the incident. He did not hear the gunfire and was not injured. Chen Nan also claimed that he was not the chief conspirator and believed that the sentence was too harsh.

The collegial court pointed out that the road adjacent to the victim's home was still a place accessible to the public. The bullet penetrated the stainless steel door, and innocent people could be injured if they were not careful. The court found that the long and short guns used in this case were powerful, and only one shot was fired purely because the plan was blocked. Moreover, the mastermind insisted on committing the crime again afterwards, showing a strong determination to commit a crime. The subjective malignancy was serious and there was no sympathy at all.

In response to the two persons' request, the judge pointed out that their behavior seriously undermined social security and caused panic among the public. Not only was there no case where the circumstances should be taken lightly but the law should be taken seriously, there was also no room to reduce the punishment. The final decision was to reject the appeal, and uphold Wang Nan’s sentence of 8 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 yuan, and Chen Nan’s sentence of 7 years in prison and a fine of 100,000 yuan for violating the regulations on the control of firearms, ammunition, and knives. The whole case can still be appealed.
