Statement from Ekrem İmamoğlu after the death of retired police officer Ali Şekeroğlu

Imprisoned Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made a statement following the death of 60-year-old retired police officer Ali Şekeroğlu, who attempted to end his life during the protest organized by retirees in Ankara demanding a raise and died in the hospital.

Şekeroğlu was seriously injured during the protest in front of the Constitutional Court (AYM) on September 25 and could not be saved in the hospital where he was taken.

İmamoğlu's statement was published on the social media account of the Presidential Candidate Office.

Expressing his condolences to Şekeroğlu's relatives and his two children, İmamoğlu said, "Words are not enough to express our sadness and anger... Unfortunately, no words can bring Ali Bey back... Conscience is over. Morality is over."

Drawing attention to the economic problems experienced by retirees, İmamoğlu also called on municipalities.

"I cannot find words to say to those who condemn retirees to such despair. We cannot stop until our retirees get their rights," said İmamoğlu, asking the IMM administration and municipalities to give more emphasis to social supports for retirees.
