Resident doctor removed from Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto (SP) for exposing a patient's medical records in a post, Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro, 26 years old, graduated in medicine a year ago from the Federal University of Tocantins and entered, at the beginning of 2026, the residency program at the medical center linked to USP.
The professional, registered with the Regional Council of Medicine of São Paulo (Cremesp), became the target of ethical-administrative proceedings because he disclosed sensitive data about an overweight patient on the internet.
The information was accompanied by the comment "this is a sample so you can understand what we deal with here", conduct considered prejudiced by the hospital.
The post reached more than 100,000 views before being deleted. Faced with the repercussions, the head of the Anesthesiology program and the Medical Residency Committee (Coreme) removed the doctor from his duties at the hospital, and the institution opened an internal ethics investigation procedure.
At the same time, Cremesp opened an investigation to investigate the case.
In a note, lawyer Thaffer Nasser, who works in the defense of Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro, informed that he was aware of the temporary removal and that he will analyze the circumstances and grounds for the measure.
The defense declared that the case is handled internally with caution and responsibility, highlighting that the professional has provided the necessary clarifications and collaborated with the investigations.
Academic trajectory
Before entering medical residency in São Paulo, Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro completed high school at a state school run by the Goiás Military Police in Porangatu (GO), a city with 45 thousand inhabitants 406 kilometers from Goiânia (GO).
In 2019, he was approved and entered the medicine course at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), on the Palmas (TO) campus.
During his university years, he worked on teaching and scientific research projects.
Among the main activities carried out, he acted as a monitor, participated in a scientific initiation scholarship program and researched topics such as community perception about donation of bodies and organs for teaching and morphophysiology applied to Covid-19.
He was also a member of the UFT University Oncology League and co-authored scientific works on prostate cancer mortality, presented at conferences and published in a scientific journal.
In the final stretch of graduation, in 2025, he applied for the medical residency selection process at Hospital das Clínicas, linked to the Faculty of Medicine at USP in Ribeirão Preto.
Competing for the specialty of anesthesiology, a three-year program with 12 places, Guilherme placed seventh overall among 231 registered candidates.
He achieved a score of 7.2 in the theoretical test and 8.5 in the practical assessment, finishing with a final average of 7.85, which guaranteed him a place to start activities at the hospital in March 2026.
Display of medical records on social media
The controversy involving the doctor's conduct became public on September 21, when he shared on his social network account a photo of a screen containing the medical records of a patient treated at the Ribeirão Preto HC.
In the caption, in a tone of "outburst", the resident ridiculed the patient's physical and health indicators, displayed in the image with data on weight, height, BMI and respiratory condition.
The post quickly went viral, garnering between 100,000 and 130,000 views. After being alerted by users and healthcare professionals that the exposure violated sensitive data and constituted shameful conduct, the resident deleted the post and deactivated his Instagram profile.
In an official position, Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto regretted what happened and classified the attitude as prejudiced, highlighting that the publication is inappropriate and contrary to the professional stance required by the institution.
The HC reported that it continuously guides and evaluates residents on ethical, legal and patient safety aspects.
Experts in bioethics and medical law point out that, although the patient's name was not explicit, the revelation of sensitive clinical details constitutes a serious violation of the Code of Medical Ethics and disrespect for the General Data Protection Law (LGPD).
