Merz's visit to New York is canceled, political debates intensify in Germany

While no official statement has been made by the Prime Ministry regarding the decision yet, according to information obtained from government circles, it was stated that Merz's visit to New York was canceled because it was necessary for him to be in Berlin. It was noteworthy that the cancellation decision coincided with a period when discussions were intensifying in Germany about Merz's political future and the direction the government would follow.

Following the elections to be held in Germany on Sunday in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, discussions about Merz's leadership within the ruling Christian Union parties (CDU/CSU) are expected to come to the fore again. It is considered that discussions within the party regarding Merz's leadership and the government's policies may intensify, especially if the election results are negative for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.

As part of his visit to New York, Merz was scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly and receive the "Henry Kissinger Award" given by the American Academy in Berlin. However, it was previously announced that the award ceremony was removed from the program.

With the complete cancellation of the visit, Merz's planned speech at the UN General Assembly will not take place. Instead of Merz, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is expected to speak on behalf of Germany at the UN General Assembly. Wadephul also represented Germany at Merz's UN General Assembly meeting last year.
