Start of the heating season in Poland – rules, preparations and threats

Although in many regions of Poland you can still feel the last breath of summer, and the daytime temperature exceeds 20 or even 25 degrees Celsius, we are getting closer to truly cold nights and days. For many people, the beginning of the heating season is the moment when they need to turn on the heating, check the installation and prepare for higher bills.

There is no single, legally defined date for the start of the heating season. When the radiators will be turned on is determined primarily by the outside temperature, conditions in the building and the property manager, housing community or cooperative.

Is there a specific start date for the heating season?

Although conventionally the heating season starts on October 1 and ends on March 31, in practice managers respond to weather forecasts and residents' reports. It is assumed that the heating is turned on when the average daily outdoor temperature drops below 10-12 degrees Celsius for 3 days in a row.

Bleeding radiators. When is it needed?

Before the heating season begins, it is worth performing a few basic activities, including: clean the radiators from dust; check whether they heat evenly, bleed the radiators if you hear any gurgling or noise. It may be necessary to bleed the radiator if the top remains cold even though the bottom is warm. First of all, you should check the patency of the chimney and ventilation ducts.

The heating season also brings great tragedies

The beginning of the heating season unfortunately means a sharp increase in the number of victims of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning - called a silent, invisible, odorless killer - in apartments and single-family houses.
