Around 3,000 people demonstrate in Leipzig against right-wing extremism

Around 3,000 people took part in a rally against right-wing extremism in Leipzig. After the AfD's election victory in Saxony-Anhalt, a “Time for Action” alliance was formed and called for demonstrations across Germany, including in Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle and Erfurt. A demo is planned on Sunday at Dresden's Theaterplatz.

“It is the voters of the AfD who ensured that a right-wing nationalist, anti-democratic and anti-constitutional party won the elections in Saxony-Anhalt,” explained former pastor Christian Wolff. This must get all Democrats on the scene. “We must clearly and unambiguously stand up for the values ​​that are the basis for social justice, cultural diversity and social cohesion.”

Verdi official: “Where rights divide, we stand together.”

Tobias Baumann, chairman of the Verdi district in Leipzig/North Saxony, pointed out that the unions lived solidarity. “Solidarity has no place for racism, exclusion and misanthropy. Now it's important that we don't leave our democracy to those who want to undermine it from within."

“We call on all people in Leipzig to take part in the discourse on the streets and not to leave it to the AfD,” explained co-organizer Irena Rudolph-Kokot for the “Leipzig takes a seat” action network. It's about showing solidarity with the people and civil society in Saxony-Anhalt and preventing the AfD from achieving further election victories.
