SEOUL -- Nearly 40 million user accounts of South Korean streaming platform Tving were compromised in a massive data breach stemming from a hacking incident reported in June, a joint investigation showed Thursday.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the results of a three-month government-civilian investigation into the breach at Tving, an online video streaming platform operated by entertainment giant CJ ENM Co.

■ (LEAD) Lee calls for police's internal reform amid shift in investigative authority

SEOUL -- President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday called on the police to step up internal reform following a legal revision that will transfer prosecutors' investigative authority entirely to the police.

Lee renewed the call during a meeting with his top aides following the recent passage of a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act, which will completely strip the prosecution of all investigative authority, leaving such power solely to the police.

■ S. Korean won hits 14-month high against U.S. dollar as Japan's yen strengthens

SEOUL -- The South Korean won climbed to a near 14-month high against the U.S. dollar Thursday, as the strength of the Japanese yen weighed on the dollar.

The won was quoted at 1,359.3 won per dollar at 3:30 p.m., up 9.4 won from the close of the previous stock trading session.

■ Labor ministry's new guidelines exclude profit-linked bonus demands from mandatory bargaining

SEOUL -- The labor ministry on Thursday issued new guidelines for labor negotiations, outlining demands for bonuses tied to a fixed percentage of a company's profit cannot be a mandatory subject of collective bargaining.

The ministry's new guidelines are designed to clarify the revised trade union law that went into effect in March and expands subcontracted workers' bargaining rights, while increasing the accountability of prime contractors.

■ S. Korea calls on athletes to do country proud at Asian Games in Japan

SEOUL -- With the 2026 Asian Games in Japan merely weeks away, South Korea called on its athletes to do their nation proud at the quadrennial competition.

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) held the launch ceremony for the national delegation for 20th Asian Games, to be held in and around the Japanese prefecture of Aichi, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4. Nagoya, capital of Aichi, will serve as the main host city.
