The aboriginal population in Taoyuan City is approximately 91,000, ranking second in the country after Hualien County. Today (9th), the Education Bureau held the "E-book Release Conference of the Aboriginal Education Curriculum Development and Practice Pilot Plan" at the Aboriginal Education Resource Center of Qiao Ai Elementary School, together with teachers, students and members of the strategic alliance of 25 schools who participated in the compilation, and released "Urban Force: Compilation of Aboriginal Curriculum Practices in the Taoyuan City Metropolitan Area", witnessing the transformation of Taoyuan Aboriginal education from a single event to a systematic curriculum, from single-school practice to cross-school learning, and gradually developing towards universal original education, allowing Aboriginal culture to continue to take root from tribes into campuses.
Education Director Liu Zhongcheng said that indigenous education not only allows indigenous students to understand their own culture, but also allows all children to learn to understand differences and respect diversity. "Urban Force" helps Aboriginal students build identity and self-confidence through interactive courses, and also allows non-Aboriginal students to enter the culture and understand each other. Taoyuan promotes indigenous education for all, hoping to make indigenous education a common learning experience for all children.
"Urban Force" is divided into junior high school and junior high schools, and includes the process of curriculum development, teaching practice and reflection and revision of 25 schools. Taoyuan has established the "Metropolitan Aboriginal Curriculum Strategic Alliance" since 1999. Through teacher training, cross-school preparation, expert companionship and resource injection, it has gradually transformed Aboriginal education from past festivals or single activities into a systematic curriculum integrating language, nature, society, art and comprehensive activities.
The e-books present the different cultural courses of each school. For example, Ruifeng Elementary School explores the traditional spirit from the Seediq culture, Dacheng Elementary School understands ethnic beliefs through the Saisiyat dwarf festival, Bade Middle School understands the wisdom of life through the Amis ramie culture, and Daxi Elementary School understands the development of the ethnic group from the historical events of the Atayal people. The course also combines cultural industry teachers’ collaborative teaching, AI, Scratch and SDGs sustainability issues to connect traditional culture with technology, life and global issues.
Among them, the ramie culture course of the Eighth German Middle School allows students to feel the roughness and toughness of ramie by touching hemp rope fibers, and then understand the relationship between plant structure and traditional weaving from the nature class. They also think about the protection and emotion carried by ethnic groups' weaving in the Chinese class, and further write down their own "symbols of love." Some people think of the dolls that accompany them, some think of their family’s bracelets, and some think of the meal they enjoy at home every day. They understand the emotions and inheritance behind culture based on life experience.
Panay Mulu, Director of Aboriginal Administration, said that he hopes that through education and cultural cooperation, more children can see the depth and value of Aboriginal culture and promote the inheritance between different generations.
