Van accident leaves one dead and several injured in Minas Gerais

The accident involved a van carrying 10 workers. According to information obtained, the vehicle lost its brakes while descending a hill, hit the curb and then hit the embankment of a vacant lot.

The 21-year-old driver and two other people were trapped in the wreckage. Rural worker José Cândido Tomé, aged 77, succumbed to serious injuries and died after arriving at Santa Casa.

According to the Military Police, the van was in poor condition. The military found that the vehicle was traveling with an expired license and without seats or seat belts for the passengers transported in the rear.

"We had a male patient yesterday who was discharged from hospital in the afternoon. He underwent a surgical procedure on Monday night. He was discharged only with a referral, he was stable, without any complications", he stated.

Regarding another patient, Isla reported: “We had another male patient transferred this morning to Alfenas, he will undergo oral and maxillofacial evaluation due to multiple facial fractures.”

The nurse also detailed the situation of patients who remain hospitalized. "With us, we remain with four hospitalized patients, of the four, two are still awaiting transfer. One is in a more serious condition, still in need of invasive ventilatory support, he needs an ICU bed. Of the other two who are with us, all will undergo surgeries with us, orthopedic, scheduled between tomorrow and Monday", he said.

The Public Ministry of Labor reported having received reports from relatives of the victims indicating that the company Lavita was the employer of the workers and responsible for transportation.

In a note sent to the newsroom, the company denied any link with those involved in the accident. According to Lavita, “it had no employment relationship with any of the people involved in the accident”. The company also stated that the displacement was unrelated to its activities and declared solidarity with the families of the victims.
