PhD student and tourism professional Gülşah Gizem Angı underwent surgery at Akdeniz University Hospital on April 5, 2022, due to an approximately 33-millimeter type 2 myoma detected in her uterus. Angı, whose condition worsened during the hysteroscopic myomectomy operation, could not be saved despite the intervention. In the investigation initiated upon the complaint of Angı's family following her death, an examination was conducted to determine whether there was any medical error or negligence during the surgery. During the trial, official correspondence, minutes and witness statements included in the file claimed that the hysteroscopy system used in the operation was not in the hospital inventory and was brought as a 'demo'. The authority and training status of the personnel involved in the use of the device were also among the issues examined within the scope of the case. It was stated that Gülşah Gizem Angı's death occurred as a result of 'fluid overload' that occurred during hysteroscopic myomectomy surgery. In the report, it was noted that a total of 24 liters of fluid, 8 of which were 3 thousand cc isotonic, were used during the surgery. It was stated that the difference between the amount of fluid entering and exiting the uterus at the end of the procedure was calculated as 1500 cc. It was stated that Angı, who weighed 58 kilos before the surgery, weighed 74 kilos at the autopsy, her body weight increased by 16 kilos and there were signs of widespread edema.
Complainants, party lawyers and defendants attended today's hearing of the case held at Antalya 15th Criminal Court of First Instance. After taking the statements and defenses of the parties at the hearing, the court panel decided not to have jurisdiction and ordered the file to be sent to the high criminal court for the continuation of the trial.
Expressing that they were satisfied with the decision, the complainant's lawyer Onur Şahin said, "From the beginning, we claimed that the incident was not a simple doctor's error or a foreseeable situation. There is a very heavy loss of life that should not have happened in a public institution. It is not clear how and by whom the demo device, which is still used in surgery and is a criminal tool in our definition, was brought there. Our legal struggle, which has been going on for about 5 years, to ensure that those who hope to benefit from the procurement and use of this device and those who use the device without training receive the punishment they deserve, has entered a new phase today. "The Criminal Court of First Instance ruled that the trial be held in the high criminal court to examine issues such as conscious negligence and negligence. In our opinion, the trial is carried out by a panel of expert judges, not by a single judge, and those responsible should receive the punishment they deserve before Turkish justice."
Gülşah Gizem Angı's father, Ayhan Angı, said, "We believe that justice will be served. The 15th Criminal Court of First Instance made a very appropriate decision. We are grateful to them. We also believe that from now on, what is necessary will be done in the court. The law is always necessary for everyone. Both those who make false statements and those who make true statements should know that they will get their rights. I believe that my dear child's blood will not be left undone."
Gülşah Gizem Angı's mother, Vicdan Angı, who could not control her tears after the hearing, said, "Justice will be served eventually. We have infinite trust. Everything is for my dear child. My baby will sleep a little bit comfortably."
