Six people die after explosion and building collapse in Athens

Six people who were missing after the collapse of a building in Athens were found dead this Saturday (26), according to emergency services.

The victims are four American tourists and an elderly couple, made up of a British man and a Greek woman, according to public broadcaster ERT.

The two-story building collapsed on Friday (25), following an explosion in the historic neighborhood of Plaka, close to the Acropolis.

According to the mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak, and two other buildings were at risk.

The rescue operation continued this Saturday, with excavators and thermal cameras; around 30 rescuers and three sniffer dogs worked at the scene.
