The extension project of Hanxiang Road in Xitun District, Taichung has started. The widening and reconstruction of Waqi Bridge is expected to be completed in December 2027.

With the rapid development of Zhongke Park and Taichung Industrial Zone, the City Construction Bureau has invested a total of approximately 9.38591 million yuan to promote the "new road extension project from Hanxiang Road in Xitun District to Dongda Road." The total length of the project is approximately 3.3 kilometers. When completed, it will become the seventh east-west connection road connecting Zhongke and the urban area. The first phase of the bridge project has started. It will take the lead in the widening and reconstruction of the Waqiao Bridge, which will effectively share the traffic load on Taiwan Avenue.

Taiwan Avenue plays an important transportation role in downtown Taichung between Zhongke and Taichung Industrial Zone. With industrial development and population growth, traffic demand increases. After the MRT Blue Line project is launched, the traffic capacity of Taiwan Avenue will face greater challenges.

The city government has planned alternative road networks in advance. Currently, the east-west connection roads in Xitun District include Zhongke Road, Xitun Road, Fuke Road, Taiwan Avenue, Chaoma Road, and the Zhengshi Road extension project expected to be completed in 2027, a total of 6 main roads. After the Hanxiang Road extension project is completed, it will become the seventh east-west connection road connecting Zhongke and the urban area, further improving the overall transportation network in Xitun District.

Construction Director Chen Datian said that the total length of this project is about 3,300 meters, the planned road width is 40 meters, and the total cost is about 9.38591 billion yuan, of which the engineering cost is about 3.4 billion yuan, and the land and surface property compensation fee is about 5.98591 billion yuan. Considering the huge scale of the overall project, the project will be promoted in years and sections.

The scope of the first phase of construction is the section between the Waqiao Bridge in Xilin Lane and the culvert of National Highway No. 1. The pipeline relocation operation was completed in May 2026. The subsequent widening and reconstruction project of the Waqiao Bridge will be carried out and is expected to be completed in December 2027.

In addition, the 177K+274 culvert widening project of National Highway 1 is currently being planned and designed by the Highway Bureau of the Ministry of Transport. It is expected that the project contracting will be carried out in the first half of 2027, and the target is to be completed by the end of 2029. After the completion of each phase of the project, the efficiency of Sino-Sino-Scientific Joint External Transportation will be effectively improved.

The Construction Bureau pointed out that during the construction of the first phase of the bridge project, the entire bridge will be closed, and the public is asked to use alternative roads such as Guangfu Road Lane 163, Yongan Lane 1 and Fadi East Street.
